GNTX 187 Autodim Mirror Question

So I pulled and installed a GNTX 187 autodim mirror from a Taurus a few weeks ago. It's installed and working properly. It is only an autodim mirror so it has no temperature or compass feature. If I were to pull one with the compass and temperature feature, would it just be a simple swap of the mirrors since I already have the line running OR would I need to use the wiring that comes with the new mirror?

Also what model has both the temperature and compass feature and what vehicle should I remove it from?

My mirror also had this box thing that clips onto the mounting part where the mirror connects to the mount on the windshield, what is that thing?

GNTX187 mirrors came like you have, as well as with compass, or with compass/temp.

98-2002 Suburbans (GMC and Chevy) and the Tahoe smaller versions had it.

Saturns had the updated GNTX 200xx series mirror with same options during the mid 2000s, like 2004-2007.

NyteFire :are you asking if it both models use the same connector and pinouts?

Like the pins would be missing from the less featured model?

It's actually a good question. I could see myself wiring it up for all features. Then pick up least cost. If I'm not satisfied, sell it and get one with the options I want.

I thought that was the compass part.

Yes I'm asking if a "fully loaded" mirror has the same pin set up as mine. So if I were to swap the plain autodim for one with a compass and temperature readings would it just be a simple swap of the mirrors or not.

I'll grab a pic of the wiring and everything during lunch

Could you post a pic of the "box thing"? Is it black, and about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of a pack of cigs? If so it sounds like a compass module.

For the temperature function to operate, you will need the outside temp sensor.

It is the compass module. This is in my 2005 SEL with the mirror from the factory. The compass sends the signal to the cluster where you have the read out on SEL vehicles or LS Sables.

Now a mirror from a 2002-03 model year vehicle will work. (Gentex 177) This is what is in my 2006. You need power and ground... the compass is contained within the mirror.

It would be neat to Install one of these. I an working on modding a Gen 2 explorer/mountaineer over-head console. Needs VSS for some reason. An autodim mirror would be a neat addition.

Also, in regards to wiring. I have only seen casual pictures of gentex mirror connectors. Few of them show the wire end. If you can post pics of where the wire and terminals enter the connector I can make something of that. And also the connector Face. It's possible you just need to repin with different connector plugs.

The explorer I pulled the Overhead Console from had a mirror connectors hanging from it. It was a 5 pin. I'll throw a pic up. Not sure which since the mirror itself was gone.

I think as long as it's a gentex and not a Donnelly, you'll be OK. Note what vehicle it came from. Look for the Pinout for that model year. Or let us know. What did your last one come from?
