hey wusup guys?... im a newbie here n thinking o/ getting a loaded 2001+ merc sable LS pemium w/ duratec.... now i just want to know if this will work w/o major fabrication...... will a turbo kit that has been put into a contour/mystique/cougar (with a taurus 3.0 duratec engine swap) also mount up the same way to our cars? ...... thx

PS:
i saw a cougar the other day featured on this site w/ a 3.0 duratec and the turbo kit...

ex: turbo 3.0 cougar at arizonadynochip.com

It won't mount up the same way, there's no room. It is possible with as you said major fabrication. Expect to pay 8-10k to get it running properly and tuned.

I didn't even know cougars had a 3.0L 'Tec in them . But either way, I imagine you'd be better off building your own turbo anyway. Some of the parts in that kit aren't going to be compatible and you're going to have to do lots of fabrication work. If you're serious about it, talk to a knowledgable mechanic face-to-face and see what you're getting into.

The Cougar never came w/ the 3.0.. just the 2.5.. But.. remember the 2.5/3.0 hybrid Brad has?

And.. what parts of the kit wouldn't be compatible? I mean... really.. is there that much less room in the Taurus?

If I'm not mistaken, the turbo kit probably only works with the MTX tranny. I don't know if it has to do with physical size or location of the tranny, but there's more clearance, with the cougar/contour MTX.

Neither the cougar or contour came with the 3.0, but some members have done swaps. Remember, they're essentialy the same block, with just different bores.

Maybe consider looking into getting a remote mount turbo, may be cheaper, being that there would be less fabrication , and more room to work with.

Not only that, but the sub frame shape is actually the hardest issue to get around. The AT is much larger, but the rear headder can be modified to get around that hurdle. The Major problem is the subframe has a much diffrent shape and smaller inner area, not allowing the kit to be even close to fiting.

8-10K.......umm yea 8-10K mabye if you made the motor bullit proof, everything ported, and a built up tranny, custom axels then yea its going to be 10K.

To slap a turbo on there, mabye lose an accessory or two, get some injectors, fuel pump, MAF, and other basics and make 300HP would probably run you about 3000 (high guess) then installation would be another 3k but anyone with a welder and mechanical knowledge can DIY. Its be more expensive than on a stang of course but for exmaple, a 17 year old who wants to be a mechanical engineer built his for like 700 bucks. Twin turbo 5.0.

I dont think it would be quite that easy or I think more people would have done it by now. It almost seems your going to have to move the entire engine over 6 inches to think about it. Damn tranny.

Very few people are willing to make headers?

I plan on making mine

Tons of the turbo mustangs guys have made thier own if they dont just flip the stock shorty headers :p.

If you can weld together your own cold and hot side making headers shouldnt be a huge problem, you can buy the plates to bolt em up online and just weld pipes off those.

He's Canadian... his estimates are going to seem high....

I have no doubt the Taurus can be turbo'd for less, but the time, effort, and finances to accomplish such a task is outside of 99.99% of the Taurus community.
