Screaming Noise, What Is It?

'96 OHV This car screams mostly when cold--but not all the time. Coming from driver's side of hood, it's VERY loud. In particular, seems to be coming from maybe the CCRM. Anyone ever heard of something like this?

It also has a random problem with not starting. Only does it sometimes, and only after the car has been driven for awhile. I have replaced the fuel filter and plugs/wires. Car also stalls coming to a stop on very hot days. Should I maybe try a new CCRM and Coil?

Thanks, and a very good forum here...

Doesn't sound like there's a problem with the CCRM. If there was, there would be problems with the fans and A/C clutch. Does this "screaming" that you hear happen to sound more like a loud ringing, like, if your ears were ringing? I get that sound on occasion, but not excessively loud. I'm not sure what it is but I'm guessing that it's the alternator or something. Although, I've tested the alternator output and other electrical things at school and everything checks out.

As for the occasional no start and stalling. Does it only happen after you've been driving on the highway, or a road where you usually hit steady speeds at 45 or higher? It sounds like there is a possibility of the Torque converter clutch sticking.

Thanks for the reply Mr. X. It sounds like an electronic scream or wail that pulses. It is a pretty high pitch. I don't know if that makes sense. It is coming from on the opposite side of the engine as the drive belt.

Now I'm getting some bearing going out in the drive belt also. This nasty winter is killing this car :(

On the stalling problem, it happens most often after slow in-town speeds. But, it has happened after both speed scenarios.

A couple of things to check.

Camshaft position sensor assembly. When the shaft galls on the bearing surfaces machined into the housing, it can eventually break -- and the bottom end drives the oil pump. Bad when it breaks.

But most people hear chirping, like a bird is caught under the hood, not screaming.

A second possibility is the ABS pump/valves.

Third could be the secondary AIR system, if they put that on the NE Vulcan in 96. It's on my 98 and was done for CA and NE cars and is a pain. It's supposed to run only about 30 seconds on startup, and then randomly for a few seconds during idle as an operational double-check, not all the time.

My vote is for the cam synchro... they usually just chirp, but i have heard some bad enough to screech, and it's on the driver's side of the engine, so you should be checking that pronto.
