Rear Speaker Deck

First off, I'm new to the forums so forgive my noobness. I own a 1998 Ford Taurus SE. Anyways, I was cleaning out my trunk and remember reading about some Taurus having Mach Systems. So I was checking my rear speakers and they are just Ford speakers. It respect to that, I noticed the extra 6x9 Speaker opening that has been spoken about on multiple occasions on the forums. Now, I'm confused on a couple of things here.

1. I'm wanting to add a 6x9 to fill the speaker hole. I bought some Quick Splice Wire Connectors so that I could just tap off of the OEM Speakers. Will this work out ok?

2. How do you remove the read deck to get to the top half of the speakers from the interior? I've read about removing the speaker grills but nothing about adding the speaker. Do I have to remove the whole back seat assembly to do so or is their a quicker/ easier way of doing this?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance- Sorry if all the above questions have already been answered. I have searched for hours only to get mixed results.

Hey Mikey,

The mach speakers are the same as the standard ones, but the system includes an upgraded RCU(amp) and has tweeters that say Mach on the front door sails. The Mach amp has a total of 80watts, compared to rhe standard 12watt system. The 6x9 speaker hole is for a sub, which was included for the 1996 model year premium sound upgrade by JBL. The JBL amp is identical to the Mach, except for an additional harness for the sub. I dont think that adding a 6x9 speaker would be a good idea, simply because of a lack of power. It could probably be done, but ive never tried it. Alot of members upgrade to the Mach system by purchasing the amp and tweeters from the member Durasel. I personally just upgraded to the JBL system in my '05 with Pioneer 2 ways all around. Sounds pretty darn good to me!

Good luck with your new car!

The 6x9 hole is for the subwoofer that came with the JBL sound system. I wouldn't utilize that hole for any speaker other than the JBL speaker. If you don't have the JBL system and add amplification for that speaker, you might as well put a bigger subwoofer box in the trunk.
