Ok I've done all I can but I just can't figure this one out. It's a standard 2000 Taurus SES with a 3.0 DOHC Duratec engine. The check engine light popped up a while back and since then I've replaced the EGR system, MAF, both oxygen sensors, the spark plugs twice, and these codes still keep popping up. I saw in another topic that someone said it might be my air intake, fuel pump or filter, or the o-rings and gaskets in the fuel injection systrem and valve cover gasket. Sometimes when I try to start the car it cranks real loud and doesn't turn over. The starter, alternator and everything I can think of checks out okay though I still need to check the fuel filter and pump. When taking off, I've been told I pop out black smoke, but I thought changing the oxygen sensors should have corrected that. Also it runs very rough and doesn't always accelerate as it should. The RPMs will go up but I won't go any faster or I will but very slowly even when my RPMs are close to redlining. When idling at a stoplight or something, it idles really low like around 500 and shakes real bad like it's about to die. I think I might have to switch to a higher octane level since I've been using regular since that was what I was told to use by the dealer I bought it from. I'm at wits end on this. I've done everything I could think of and what everyone I've talked to has recommended. All the fluid levels are good too, saw someone posted that idea so I fugured I'd get that out of the way. I really don't know what else to try. Any kind of repairs I'm more than willing to do so don't be shy about ideas. I read somewhere I might have to replace the fuel system and a few other things so I don't know yet. If I find the problem I'll be sure to post it here. Any and all ideas are welcome.

Take a can of brake clean or carb cleaner and spray around your intake gaskets, tubes, vac lines, etc. Be careful not to spray it on hot car parts (flames). It the idle inproves, you have a air leak. Usally when you have a bank lean you have a vac leak.

P0171 & P0174

According to my Haynes Service manual for the 1996 thru 1998 Taurus/Sable both of these codes indicate:
* P0171 >> System Adaptive Fuel too lean - Bank1
* P0174 >> System Adaptive Fuel too lean - Bank2

Nothing like a good descriptive statement. I have no idea what exactly these mean other the it appears you have an air/fuel ratio problem.

If the car runs and probably rough, I'd put the vacuum gauge on it and see what see says. Also, you have to look at things from a system level, why you are getting these trouble codes? What's the root cause?

For example I was getting the famous P0401 - EGR insufficient flow detected (another descriptive statement). In most cases a lot of people replace the DPFE sensor or clean the EGR port/tubing. In my case I had leaky intake manifold gaskets setting the P0401 code. Sometimes you have to think out of the box to solve problems. Nothing replaces experience. The dealer is the one that found this issue with my car.

I hope this gives you a few ideas how to go about looking for this problem.

Typically, when your PCM sets both codes at once, you either have an air intake leak after the MAF (but before an individual runner), your EGR is stuck open (always flowing), or you are lacking fuel (incomplete combustion is occurring).
As for P0401 being caused by leaking intake manifold gaskets? Only if you had a plethora of other codes as well... I would suspect that the reason they told you manifold gaskets was so that they could pull the manifold off and de-gunk the EGR ports in the intake. (I had to do the same thing to my Dad's Taurus).
