The last person (some Ford dealer in Lexington, SC) superman'd on the oil pan drain plug. Just confirming that a 13mm socket is used on that before I start hammering away on the ratchet to loosen the plug? Thanks.

No clue what size.. but make sure you do it when the engine is hot. MIght help a tad and lets the oil flow better.

Already took the y-pipe off.
They probably used an impact wrench to tighten it. Look out for crossed threads.

I gota take the pan off, so either the oil comes out the drain plug or I'll make a large mess on the garage floor loosening all the oil pan bolts :)

Using the 3/8" drive rachet w/a 13mm socket...tried everything from hammering to pushing myself against the car to get more leverage...nada.

Do I go in search of a 1/2" 13mm socket (that isn't deep) so I can use my breaker bar?

Almost tempted to call the Ford dealer that did this...but that does no good.

Heh.. You can get adaptors from 3/8 to 1/2"

Torch?

They won't fit, tranny pan in the way :\.

I'm going to AutoZone again tmrw...get myself some exhaust piping for a cheater pipe...or get a 3/8" breaker bar or a 13mm 1/2" standard socket. I'll check WalMart too.

AutoZone had a 13mm 1/2" drive socket. Attached to my 18" 1/2" drive breaker bar, a simple push and voila oil is draining as we speak. Thanks guys :)

I think he's changing the pan gasket.

Yup. Learning a lot as well...and regretting some things too.

This Pro Seal black RTV instant gasket silicone came with no directions. How am I supposed to know how long to leave the stuff on the gasket before installing the oil pan w/the new gasket? Looks like I wait 15 min before torqueing the pan together. Nor does it say how long to wait till you add oil.

Superman also installed my oil filter...hopefully i can use rubber jar openers or something and hopefully make that work.

Nick,

My phone died today.
I just got your message.

Hopefully you figured the rtv thing out.

Nick, you've got my cell phone number (I think)...call me if you have any questions.

If the filter is on too tight, stab it with a big flathead screwdriver, let the oil drain out, and use that to get additional leverage to unscrew it. The oil filter should NEVER be on that tight. Doing so collapses the gasket and can cause the filter to leak, especially on a high flow engine like the Duratec.

Everyone here should go to wherever they buy tools and buy the hugest ass set of channel locks they have.

I have used them for oil filters , collapsing caliper pistons and everything else that I can't get a grip or leverage on.

I have a set of Blue Point that I got from the SNap on Guy 20 years ago and they still save me on 1 out of every 3 larges jobs I tackle.

That and stripped or severely over tightened oil pan drains are why you can't trust an oil lube shop.

Hand tight on the oil filter, and "snugged" on the oil pan drain bolt are all it needs. I hand tighten the oil filter and then back it off 1/4 turn. Always oil the new oil filter gasket before installation. I've never had one leak or require any more than hand strength to remove. In my 15+yrs of car ownership/DIY maintenance, I've only been to an oil lube shop about 5 times.

QFT. I've forgotten to oil the gasket before, and kinked it and caused all the oil to shoot out the filter and onto the floor in less than 8 seconds when I started the car up. D'oh! Do you have any idea how much of a pain it is to clean up seven quarts of oil on a garage floor?

Well f&ck. It never said that in the writeup...to lube the gasket before installing it. I already installed the RTV silicon in the 2 places and its been curing since 6P yesterday and I torque'd the bolts to the oil pan to spec. Do I take it back apart and lube it? Probably means I have to remove the silcone and reapply too?

How much oil gets added to the engine? I've seen 5.5qts and 6qts on here.

Not the oil pan gasket, the oil filter gasket.

This whole reading comprehension thing is new to me. :pat:

Thanks for clearing that up.
