CEL on Throwing P0451 code

Hi to all,

Just bought a '05 Taurus SE. Love the car. Runs strong, true and smooth.

The independent dealer I purchased it from replaced the gas tank pressure sensor switch on top of the tank. He told me the CEL came on and the code showed the sensor being bad. Got the replacement OEM from Ford. This was done right before I bought the car. The car is a Flex vehicle.

After bringing the car home... about 2 hours of driving, all was good. I parked it, went out about 3 hours later, started it and the CEL is back on. I take it to AutoZone and they pull a P0451 code... bad gas tank sensor!
As a side note, i did forget to cap the gas tank on the way home after filling it up. But capped it before going to Auto Zone.

I spoke with my mechanic who is pretty astute and he said he has never ever replaced that part on a car. As a side note, I was troubleshooting the AC and pulled and checked the fuse for it and the CEL went off... only to come back on again shortly. And yes... the gas cap is on tight.

Any ideas on why the CEL? Possible gas cap leaking? or hoses bad? Disconnect the batter for about 20 minutes and try it again?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Cheers,

P0451 - Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System FTP Sensor Range / Performance / Intermittent

Did you check the codes after having pulled the fuse to confirm it's still P0451?

Loose wires or a bad connection to the FTP sensor can cause this code. A mechanic should be able to hook up their scan tool and monitor the FTP reading while wiggling wires to locate the source of the fault. Obviously the reading should be stable and very near zero with the gas cap off.

Thanks for the Welcome It'sthatcar. I intend to try to do as much as I can for the car by myself... Already have a driver's side mirror to install and some blank keys that need cut and programming. In other words the "club" will come in handy.

Regarding the code... No I didn't check it again, but that's a great idea. I may get it read... disconnect the battery to clear everything and start fresh. My regular mechanic guru (who works for Richard Petty's driving schools) is out of town for a couple weeks, so I thought I might troubleshoot as much as I can.

I'll have the code read again and maybe I'll crawl up under it and see if I can reach the wires on top and see if they are connected tightly.
