Airbag codes for 34 and 35?

I have a 95' Taurus with the 3.8L and started having the airbag light start flashing codes at me. First it was code 34 then this morning I noticed it was showing me 35. I have done a search and the only cars I have found codes for is pre 92' and post 96'. It would seem that the codes were about the same so I am assuming since they were similar problems they would be probably the same for mine.

If I remember correctly the codes were Drivers side and Passenger side Squib’s are shorted. The only squib I have ever heard is a small explosive, and knowing how airbags work I am guessing that with the charges shorted there is no way to fire the airbags if I get into a wreck (somewhat likely). Besides I am sure the system is off line if the airbag light is on or flashing.

I have also noticed that the code doesn’t always show up It may do it one day and not another, or one start and not another (like going to a corner store or something).

Little history, about 2 years ago I ran into someone with a long receiver extension hitch and damaged the bumper cover at the level where the cover transitions flat on the top. This punched a hole in the cover but went no further. About a year later I ran into a pole while parking. I got about 1 ½” too close and the bumper cracked and the drivers side fell off. I replaced the bumper cover and inspected everything at that time. The sensor was not damaged and I am not thinking that this is the problem.

Where is the most likely spot that would cause both airbags to be shorted?

Thanks

Find you airbag sensors, take them off, clean the steel area they attach to
the car with light sandpaper or such, and put them back on. clean the connectors also with contact cleaner

You should have three sensors as i recall, they should be little metal boxes with an arrow on them. When you have them off, measure resistance between the four wires on all of them.

before you do anything with the airbags, disconnect the battery for 1 hour
then work on the system.

i think your left and right should be in the fender well area, Look for the small metal box with the arrow on it.

the center one will either be on the radiator support, or the fire wall.
It might be easier to find the center one first, to give you an idea of what
it looks like before you head down to the left and right ones

The airbag diagnostic module is blue and should be just behind the glove box to the side

If you find a donor to canableize, grab all the front sensors and the control module.

good luck

Well, i would take the sensors off, clean them, measure them and put them back on.
As i recall, two terminals are shorted and two have some lower resistance. I will have to go back to my notes to see what that was. by comparing resistance reading on all sensors, you can establish if one is different from the others.

you can also inspect the wiring around the sensors once you find them. One of your accidents may have cut or damaged a cable somewhere.

I know the unit checks for resistance to body ground from the sensors, so having that
clean and cleaning the contacts is a first step of trouble shooting.

When you get the electrical schematic, you can measure the actual resistance to the sensors from the diagnostic module

here are the schematics. 5 minutes with goggle would have found them.

If i were you, i hoped you followed my advice and took off all three sensors
and cleaned off the mounts and put them back on.

Go to the Upull yard and get a airbag diagnostic module. Its a blue module
behind the glove box. change it out and see what happens.

If that does not fix it, your going to have to measure all the wiring from
the airbag diagnostic module for ohms.

I had to change the module in my 90 once when i was having issues.

Bob,

Thanks for the schematic, I'll check that out. As for the sensors they were all the same and matched a neighbors car. They are clean and didn't have any issues. I am now getting code 51 which I don't see in any of the info I found or that is posted here. It is for sure a 51 there is a 2.5 second pause between the 5 and 1 and a 6 second pause between the 1 and 5. It will still give a 34, 35 and a 15 as well. I will check into this and see what I can find out I am thinking that with that many codes that the module is bad, as you alluded, but I am not a parts changer. I must know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the part is bad. I am betting it is the Module but I am going to check around more before I change it.

Thanks for the help I'll let you know what I find.

Finally changed the airbag module and it fixed the problem. Not sure what a code 51 is but it must mean that the module is wrecked.

When I was looking though the junkyard for a module. I looked for an exact match for my car within a year. All I could find were 3.0's and none of the cars in the yard had the little white module on the top of the airbag module. Almost all of them had the connector taped back from the factory.

Before I went to change anything I checked everything else and ohmed out the harness.

I didn't really think there would be a difference between airbag modules between engine family's, but better safe then sorry. I went ahead and pulled a module from a 95' with the 3.0 and everything is back to normal for the last 6 weeks or so.
