I need the true wire coding for my '98 taurus se. I installed a new head unit into it but the illumination around the air controls doesn't work and my rear defrost doesn't work. Plus the rear defrost light doesn't work. everything else works. So I need help.

I think what happened is that you forgot to hook up the wiring for the rear defrost. It's a small connection and is easily overlooked. try looking for that connection and make sure all the other connections are tight on the back of the controls.

All connections are done. But when I look at the wiring codes that came with the kit the connections for it are off. There are wires that are connected that it says are not used. So it confused me.

well, there's only one place each connector can go, and if everything is connected, I'm stumped without looking at it.

What controls work and which don't?

the control functions are on a vaccum set up. if you noticed all the little hoses running into one of the connectors, that's where the function of each dial is controlled. (except for the rear defrost) I would say take everything out and reconnect all the connections and make sure everything is tight. You might also want to check the fuses. There's a fuse for the defrost and another for the control lights (I think). look at the fuse panal cover on the upper right-hand side and you'll see which ones to check.

All of the fuses are good and everything is connected tightly. And all of the wires are connected right except for a couple grounds, but that shouldn't make a difference should it? I checked everything I could think of, but it still doesn't work.

I redid the grounds a few times to see if they would work, but it didn't work. So I am thinking that I may have to just try to redo the whole wiring in the kit, because it may be that some of the wiring is bad. Unless you have something better that I could do.

I had the same exact problem a while back, have you noticed that your low gas idiot light doesnt come on either?

When i couldnt get my HVAC controls to work, i double checked my connections and there is a wire for the dash/HVAC controls that must be connected to the switched power going into the H/U... i just happened to miss it when i was wiring the kit... I'll take the evil oval out tomorrow and snap a pic of what i'm talking about....

IIRC its an orange wire..... but dont quote me on that... till i have a pic... :D

BTW... i too have the scosche kit....

connect it to the nonconstant power wire that runs into the radio... should be a yellow wire.... so you'll have three wires going into your wire nut/splice..... a yellow from the head unit, a yellow from the car, and the orange...

The only wires that have power is the battery/constant and the acc wires. I connected it to the acc wire and it doesn't work. So if you can tell me the exact wire or even a picture would work even better.
