Hi there. I own a Taurus which I use as a broker for DHL. I`m driving about 120 M. a day. My power steering is making noises when I turn and when I replaced the serpentine belt I found that the steering pulley would move in and out. Sometimes it sounds like a cat screeching under the hood until I put it into drive, then the noise stops. Does anyone have any ideas as to what a pump would cost and how to replace it? I`m barely surviving on this job and can`t afford a mechanic. any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

How many miles are on the car?

Has the PS fluid ever been changed?

Where are you located? If you can't afford a mechanic, there may be some knowledgeable members in your area that could help you replace the pump on a weekend or something... Also, FYI - the PS pumps on Fords (and a lot of times Tauruses) can be rather loud. What type of noise is it making? Is it all the time, only at low speeds, etc?

Also, it looks like a new pump from Auto Zone is $50 plus a $22 core... not too bad. :)

I just chnaged my Ps pump 2 days ago but my car is a 98 with the Tec motor. Not sure what motor you have but, with the Tec the PS pump is right on top. And the pully is supposed to move a tiny bit back and forth. It's not the pully that moves it's the shaft it sits on. just make sure that you have the right amount of fluid in the res. and if you can, change the fluid. Just pull the line off the cooler and let it drain into a soda bottle and once the res is empty put the line back on and top off the resivor.
Chnageing the pump is easy also but, the hard line was hard for to get off cause of the angle you have to get the nut/bolt off with the open end wrench. And you'll have to tkae the pump somewheres to get the pulley off and than pressed back onto the new pump. Also my pump cost me 110-120 with the 30 core but this was at advanced auto.
Oh and if yo do change the PS pump be ready for lots of fluid to go all over the belt and other pullys :ugh: .
