How fortunate for me to have my camera handy at this moment.

This is what I swerved to avoid hitting:

That is a 17 car pileup. I was driving behind the black hatchback. The minivan and the Pontiac were behind me. This stretch of road was going downhill and there was a curve at the bottom. The below image shows how poor visibility was at the time of the pileup. What's funny was after the crash, visibility cleared up as shown in some of the other pictures.

So, here's the story. A family member had been admitted to ICU under critical condition so we had to go. I was at home for winter break and I was scheduled to go back to Reno this weekend anyways because I have work on Monday. So, I was driving the Taurus with my sisters and my parents were following in the Windstar (they were about 15 miles behind us). The weather was fine when we left. A little cloudy, but no snow. Once we got to the interstate it started to snow. Not too bad still, just light flurries. We got to about 10-15 miles before of Reno and all of a sudden there was a white-out! Snow came down hard and there was no visibility. I was shocked some people were driving without their headlights on. So I'm going 55 MPH in the right lane following the tire tracks in front of me (which I couldn't see the vehicle). I get past this hill and coast down the other side. All of a sudden, I see brake lights in the distance. I get on the brake and the lights were approaching me fast! I pumped the pedal to flash my lights to warn whoever was behind me and then nailed the pedal as hard as I could. I knew at that moment that we were going to be in an accident. I was determined not to wreck this car so I was going to aim it at the softest thing I see since there was no way it's going to stop by itself with ABS. I caught a glimpse of a break in the guardrail and in a split second I turned the wheel to aim the car at the gap. I came within millimeters of nailing the guardrail head-on. I saw a pole and thought "This is going to hurt", but luckily that pole was made of plastic so the Taurus hit it with no resistance. The car went up on the rocks and stopped harsh and sudden.

Once it stopped, I tried to get out. I felt something hit me when the car stopped and it turned out to be my sister's cell phone. I told her to call 911, but she just dialed and gave me the phone. I get out of the car, the door flies open onto the rocks and bushes and I tumble out. My sister was hanging by the seatbelt and she tumbled out when she unbuckled it. I stood there and watched people smashing into each other. It was like in slow motion. I was in shock and I was scared. I was freaking out because there was nothing I could do to stop the madness. I saw the minivan come flying and nail the concrete barrier. Then the red Escape nailed the black hatchback. The large white truck hit the red Escape and made it do a 180! The Explorer got the worse. It was going so fast it looked like it hurt! I saw some of the people running up the hill waving their arms to warn drivers. Eventually people stopped and we all helped people.

I called my parents and told them there was an accident. They were stuck in the traffic at the top of the hill, but they parked and walked down to comfort my sisters and me. All the news crews from the TV stations where there. I was on the 11 o'clock news on two channels.

The woman in the Escape and the guy driving the Explorer suffered serious neck injuries. There was also a woman stuck in traffic up the hill who went into labor. It took around ten to twenty minutes for the emergency crew and NHP to show up. In the opposite lane, a pickup truck nailed the back of a fire truck. It was utter chaos! I heard it was one of the worst crashes on this highway.

We crashed at around 3:30PM and traffic wasn't released until 6:00PM. Everyone was stuck because of the way this stretch of highway is designed. Traffic could not be rerouted and emergency crews were coming from both ends. The tow trucks came and had to clear all the cars before traffic was allowed to move. There were 17 vehicles involved, 8 of them had to be towed while 9 were able to leave with no major problems. Unfortunately, my car had to be towed. They said since I hit the rocks the car might have undercarriage damage and alignment problems so they couldn't let me leave with it. It's now sitting at the towing yard until the insurance company decides what to do with it. It may be a month before I get my car back is what my dad tells me.

What a way to start the new year, huh? And I thought 2007 was a crappy year.

Oh my! Glad you're OK!

Nice job avoiding hitting the other cars. :thumb: Not sure rocks were the greatest thing to go off into in a Taurus, but that was probably a smoother (and safer) place to land than the cars in front of you!

That's not very much snow to cause that big of a problem, apparently people don't know how to drive in that stuff out there! Does it snow very often where you were driving?

Usually it snows a few inches, but we got a large storm this year. In the city there's about 8 inches of snow and ice all over the place. I think it's the unusual conditions that just popped up that really caused it. It was fresh snow for the day (it snowed the night before so the roads were already slick) and visibility just went down to zero all of a sudden. Didn't help that it was on a downgrade with a curve.

I just realized just how close to the guardrail I came! Look at the first thumbnailed picture and look at the tire tracks in the snow! :noes:

Dude  You about smacked that guard rail, good driving skills! Glad you are alright and made a quick, smart decisions. That could have been a really nasty wreck for you. Hope the person that was in ICU is OK, and the car situation gets straightened away ASAP.

ASAP my foot! I'm without the car for a month and I don't think my insurance covers a rental. Now I gotta find a body shop to do the work. I have no clue which one is good, but the one State Farm recommends is right next door to the tow yard.

Glad you're OK! Even though it probably tore up the car a bit...it looks like you definitely made the right escape route choice.

It really looks like they weren't prepared at all to deal with slippery roads...not that I'd exactly expect that in Nevada. That really isn't much snow, but in a place that doesn't get much if at all, I can see how that, along with the visibility, could cause a big pileup.

All it takes in that kind of visibility to cause something like that is one person losing control...then other people crash trying to miss them, and then nobody else can see what happened until they're already in it. :(

My car is saddened by the damage to a spruce green brother  Hope you get it fixed up well, and soon :)

Haha, i'm looking at the first few pictures thinking "What the F*&K were you doing driving through there anyway?!?!?!" but then I scrolled down and saw the rest.... Good work on avoidance!

Better ending up in a field buried to your axles then getting flattened from behind!

Due to the crazy fog we had today/tonight, there was a 100 car pile-up near me. Two people died too, 3 are in critical, and 36 others were taken to the hospital. It's so crazy how quickly those things happen. Glad you are okay. Cars can get fixed pretty easily, but people cannot all the time. Whiplash can cause a lot of injury and pain, so it was probably best that you went off the road to avoid being rear-ended badly.

Pileups are no good :( Sorry to hear about the car. That could have been worse for both you and the car.

If it starts to get bad out, I'll get off the interstate and use regular roads.

If you didn't have ABS, would it have been as bad?

Holy ****! Nice driving! Glad you guys are alright. I always worry bout that stuff when its snowy out.

Like ford_ses said... the injury to your spruce green bull was felt by our car too.

Good luck with the insurance!

Edit: 1000th post.... wow

Holy crap, dude! That's crazy. As others have said, glad you're okay. Hope it gets all straightened out, and the sexy SEL can return to her normal life.

Daaaaaaamn.... That sucks massive ass... I like that Taurus too... Glad you were okay, I don't see much of that stuff around here.

Ouch!.... Better in the rocks then in the pile up!

I heard about this on the local news/talk radio station here. Sounded pretty nasty.

Glad you're okay! and hopefully the SEL can make a full recovery :D

Very quick thinking on your part, good job! You potentially saved not only our life but the lives of those in your car and behind you because lord knows what would've happened.

Hope the car's damage is minor, but always keep in the back of your head that the car, while not the same as the connection you had with the Sable, did exactly what you wanted it to in a dire situation. Perhaps it had to prove itself?

Wow, just wow!!! How did you not hit that guard rail. Looking at the first thumbnail pic shows how lucky you were. Glad you made the right call and everyone is OK.

I have no idea. AFAIK, the ABS didn't seem to do much. I still slid in a straight trajectory no matter how much the wheel was turned. I've had it kick on at low speeds before while I was driving and I never really felt confident about it to trust my life with it. That's why I tried my best to aim for something soft.

Well, it certainly proven itself. I miss her already. I don't have rental insurance so I'm stuck driving my grandpa's Contour. It's a '95 GL with the Zetec. Idles like crap and has a harsh 1-2 shift. Drives like there's a potato in the tailpipe too. No tilt steering so my knee is hitting the wiper stick (which I almost ripped off trying to shift). At least I have something to get me to work and around town in the mean time.

I called the insurance company today. They told me I needed to get my car out of the tow yard today because they aren't going to pay for the fees after today. That meant I had to pick a body shop today. They recommended a few shops to me and I picked one of them. I need to go to the shop tomorrow to sign some paperwork but their website looked OK. I-CAR, ASE, and BBB certified and one of their clients is the local Mercedes-Benz dealership so I assume it's going to be a good job.

So some people at the accident asked me for pictures because I was just walking around with my camera. I sent it off via email that night (apparently everyone has business cards except me). I get an email back from the woman in the red Escape today. After the accident they took her to one of the local hospitals and had a CAT scan and everything and she checked out fine. She walked away from the crash without a scratch! And that red Escape had some pretty heavy damage too!
