I am buying a used 98 Taurus Se with a 3.0 ohv engine as a winter beater. I've been going through the car getting it ready and realized the heat doesn't work fuly. I flushed the radiator and replaced the thermostat. The antifreeze that was in there was very dirty and rust colored. I flushed the radiator until the water coming out was clear. That didn't fix the heat problem.
If I leave the the fan on low there is heat. As soon as I turn the fan to med/high or high the air becomes cool withing a few seconds.
The temperature knob works. The coolant and thermorstat are new. The car runs at normal temperature according to the temp gauge.
That leads me to believe that the heater core is partially charged. I have read that maybe flushing the heater core may fix the problem.
Does this sound like a heater core problem? If so what chemical should I use to flush the heater core? CLR, radiator flush, etc???
