Gen3 Inner Tie Rod Ends

I got new tires over the weekend (Mastercraft Avenger LSRs, for the curious), since my left front one was almost bald, and they had suffered from terrible alignment. However, they couldn't align it, because both of my inner tie rods are, as he put it, "smoked". I found some guides for replacing them, but they all seem to be for outer tie rods only. I'll probably take it to a shop tomorrow and ask about it. Any advice, tips, etc?

You can do it yourself. You will still need to get an alignment afterwards though. Where abouts are you located?

In the U.S. you can get some amazing deals on alignments at firestone

To do the inner tierod, you will first need the part obviously. If you are going to do it yourself, buy the part first, you will need it to make sure you rent or buy the right tool to remove it. You could use a large crow foot wrench, or if you can find it, its basically a 16" socket that goes over the whole thing. You will need to cut the fastener that holds the dust boot on. You will need a special tool to install a new clip if you go that route. you basically back the tierod off till you feel some resistance, and then crank it really hard to break the rivet that locks it on. Oh and you will have to remove the outer tie rod end also. that is simple and takes like 10 minutes. Installation will be opposite of removal, your new part should come with a small rivet, that once the tierod is tight onto the rack, you press on it and it locks in. install the boot, not sure if other people use zip ties or if they use the special metal ties that ur supposed to. other people might have more information, but i would assume the procedure is fvery similar between your g3 and my g1

I think Autozone has loaner tools for that. I already paid for the alignment, so I just have to go back there when this is fixed. Where can I get the metal ties for the dust boot?

I got it up on a lift this afternoon. There's also some play in the outer tie rods, and the lower ball joints are CRAP. Going to have a mechanic take care of it on Wednesday. $300-$400 sound like the right range?

Sounds about right, depending on his labor rate. Usually between 1 and 1.5 hr's per side, for the inner tie rod R&R. Outer IS included simply because it HAS to come off to replace the inner, so there should be no EXTRA charge. Then there's parts cost, so that seems pretty close. I would have him break it down for you price by price, if there's any questions.

Another shop had quoted me 520. If I remember right: 70 for the ball joint, 40 for the inner joint, and 50 for the outer joint. 120 per side, so 320 total in parts, then 200 for labor. I prefer the $300-$400. :)

I got the bull back today. (Driving my dad's S-10, or at least that's what I think it is, is... different...)

The shop we took it to said that both tie rods had to go, but the ball joints were fine. I'll have them double-check when I get the alignment tomorrow.

Thanks for the help.
