Gear ratio ?

I have a 2015 Taurus SEL AWD. It originated in Canada. I did the FordEtis search for my car. On the print out, it indicates that the car has a 3.39 gear ratio. I have seen references , on this forum, to 2.77 and I think 3.16 ratios also. Is the difference due to Canadian specs?

There is no gear difference if it was originally a Canadian model.

2015 Ford Taurus 3.5-liter DOHC Ti-VCT V6
1st 4.484
2nd 2.872
3rd 1.842(FWD), 1.912(AWD)
4th 1.414
5th 1.000
6th 0.742
Reverse -2.882
Final drive 3.16:1 FWD and 3.39:1 AWD

2.77 and 3.16 were for prior year models. Such as my 2008 AWD.

It varies depending on the size of wheels originally sent with the car from the factory, as well as drivetrain configuration if I recall correctly.

Wheels size doesn't change set gear ratios inside the transmission.

Wheels size can change the "effective gear ratio" or the "final gear ratio". Put a smaller diameter wheel/tire combo on than stock and the RPM (rotations per mile) will increase, put a larger diameter wheel/tire combo on than stock and the RPM will decrease. Smaller tire will rotate faster, larger tire will rotate slower.

Here is the 2015 Ford Taurus spec sheet from Ford. It's a PDF download, it's safe as its from Ford and I downloaded it yesterday to look at. https://media.ford.com/content/ford...df.html/content/dam/fordmedia/North America/US/2015_Specs/2015_Taurus_Specs.pdf

The final drive gear will depend on the driveline configuration, for the Taurus it would be FWD or AWD and 3.5L or 2.0 EB for the 2015 model, wheels size won't make a difference. As they will change the tire size to still be the same diameter or close to the same diameter as the standard size is. If it's a RWD car then the gear will depend on whatever factory sets as the standard gear or if there is an optional gear choice. Such as with the Mustang where can get a 3.55, 3.73 or 4.10 final gear ratio.

Let's take your 2013 Taurus for example
SE Base 17" wheel/tire combo is ...........235/60-17.... 28.1" diameter and 718 revs per mile
SEL Base 18" wheel/tire combo is ..........235/55-18.... 28.2" diameter and 716 revs per mile
SEL Optional 19" wheel/tire combo is .....255/45-19.... 28.0" diameter and 720 revs per mile
Limited Base 19" wheel/tire combo is .....255/45-19.... 28.0" diameter and 720 revs per mile
Limited Optional 20" wheel/tire combo is 245/45-20.... 28.7" diameter and 704 revs per mile
SHO Base 19" wheel/tire combo is..........255/45-19.... 28.0" diameter and 720 revs per mile
SHO Optional 20" wheel/tire combo is.....245/45-20.... 28.7" diameter and 704 revs per mile

Gonna add a little based on info.

Door jamb sticker has a section for "axle" that lists the final drive. My FWD 3.5L should have a 3.16:1 gearset, and the axle code is listed as "2A" on the door jamb sticker.

I'd imagine 3.39:1 is a different code, but I don't know it.

Sorry I'm late to the discussion, This pertains to the SHO trim so it may be a little off the information you are looking for but still should prove helpful to others.

I owned a 2011 Ford Taurus SHO and I'm currently on a 2015 yes I love the car that much I purchased a second one to replace the first.

The difference in axle ratio for the SHO indicates whether the vehicle has the performance package or not. The 2.77 that has a Axle code on the driver's side door of 1A is a non PP while the the 3.16 axel ratio will instead have a 2A code indicating it has the performance package.

I do love these cars it's a shame they discontinued them for a second time. I have ran into problems with both vehicles even on simple maintenance parts where my mechanic has accidentally ordered parts for the lower trim models as many parts for the SHO are different.

Thanks to these Michigan roads I just had to have my left front wheel bearing changed two days ago. They used Moog part number 513275 which is the wheel bearing and hub assembly for the non-performance package. I never paid attention whether my second SHO had the performance package or not. It does have the 20-in flower wheels and some of the other telltale signs that you can no longer go by with years 2014+. I verified I have the 2.77 axle ratio with the 1A axle code which I'm actually happy about because if the car did have the performance package I would have needed Moog part number 513339 meaning I would have had to take the vehicle back with only 3 days left off. I hope this information helps someone, stay safe everyone and enjoy your weekend.
