Coolant Leak

I am having a major coolant leak in my Taurus. Nothing leaks until the car heats up, but once it does it looks to me like it is leaking between the engine & transmission. I had a mechanic take a quick look at it and he said it was a head gasket. I'm just not sure, I don't see any fluid leaking around the top of the engine. When i climb under the car there is fluid around the gasket were the engine and transmission mount together. Also there looks like a opening that is threaded 1/2" maybe, but no bolt in it. Engine side of were they mount together. Are there maybe freeze plugs inside there?

Your car definitely uses freeze plugs. Can you possibly grab some pictures ?

Looks like you flipped your car on it's roof. LOL That is not your engine it is your tranny. Plug the hole with something and see if it stops the leak because it is most likely not leaking from that hole. There is a lot of coolant stuff on the top side of the engine above that location.

That's where the oil pan meets the transmission, AFAIK. I don't think you've got coolant leaking there-find the source.

It looks like you've got rust issues under there as well.

Its definitely coolant, i can sit there and watch it drip out. The warmer the car gets the faster it leaks. I heard there might be freeze plugs were the engine and transmission mounts. On a side note, the thermostat wasn't opening up so i removed it and the drips slowed way down.

Probably coolant leaking out from topside and running down the backside of the block to near the pan.

Classic sign of a hose leak. Your radiator will do this too if there's a hairline crack in the tank, but nowhere near where your leak is evident. Check your radiator return hose from the block near the thermostat; also check that misbegotten hose-&-pipe assembly from the top rear of the engine to the heater core and the coolant pump. In addition to the hoses developing pinholes, the metal pipes rot with age and turn into sprinklers.

Almost forgot - don't worry about the freeze plugs. Unless you run your car with straight water in subzero temperatures, the chances of a freeze plug popping are virtually nil.

I thought that also, but it is completely dry on top and i can see actual fluid coming out of that hole. I was just gonna plug it up and keep on driving but im not sure thats safe. I just replaced the heater hose assembly last fall and all the connections on it are dry. Should i just put some sealant in the hole or try to find a correct sized bolt?

I have almost the same problem. After replacing the overflow tank due to a crack I can see it squirting out right below the back side manifold on the firewall side of the engine. What is there that could be leaking? It's very hard to see so it's hard to see exactly what it's leaking from

On the Vulcan, that's usually a timing-chain cover gasket going/gone bad. Possibly, IF your heater-core tube assembly's original, that could have pinhole leaks in the steel pipe.

I agree on the heater hose assembly. Inspect or replace it. Its $60 from autozone for the dorman brand. If it gets a pinhole leak it will spray, and it will also get worse when warm. If a head was leaking that bad I suspect you would have more issues than just a coolant leak. Yeah a timing cover leaking where the cover meets the head will run all over but you'd be able to notice it clear across the engine. I'd do the heater hose assembly. Also check around the lower intake manifold. It could leak like that too.
