My 93 Taurus GL when it stops it squeaks. I know brake squeal is normal when you stop sometimes but a friend told me it will make a similar noise when your front brake pads are worn. How can you tell when the brakes are worn?

I don't know how many miles are on the brakes I have had the car for about 6,000 miles.

My other question what is a good brand of brakes? One person told me to stick to motorcraft brakes from the dealer, somebody else told me Raybestos or Bendix. Which is better?

when the brakes wear down, they have squealers on the sides of the pad to let you know they're worn.

the only way to check is to pop the pad out and look. if the little metal tabs on the side stick out past the brake pad itself, you need pads.

however, sometimes brakes will squeal when they're dirty. the rotors get a glaze on them. maybe try some rotor cleaner. cheaper than replacing pads.

good luck.

When I had my 93, it squealed like a beeyotch, w/ new brakes too.
I purchased brake pad shims and fix it. Check for those if your brakes are still good.
