I know some of the Gen 3 tauruses have the type written on the bottom of the fluid pan. Check the under the car and see if it says.. i'm guessing it's a AXOD.

AXOD-E. That's the only tranny they used for G2s. Some models got the AX4S (or AX4N, I can never remember which one), but that was in '95.

Yes, the AX4S is prone to failure because of an Aluminum FWD piston. The AX4N has a steel FWD piston.


There are only two things you can do to prevent a transmission failure:

1. Install an auxiallary tranny cooler
2. Keep off the gas

for 80% of us 2. is not a option :burnout:

highly reccomend a cooler. fo 40-60 bucks you can get a good one.
