It is my understanding there is a recall of 2002-2003 Taurus's and Sable's for air filters that can catch on fire. I have a 2002 with the Duratec which is within the period of manufacturing dates for this problem but my vehicle isn't affected by this recall. Is the problem only with the filters on the Duratec engines then?

The air filter recall is only on 2003 models. The other recall announced at the same time was for a brake light switch and covers 00-03 models, likely including yours.

If you are worried about it, just go buy a new filter and install it.

Notta problem, already replaced the filter once with a different brand and will replace the filter again soon (almost 30K miles now, replace the filter every 15K miles).

I'm assming this is just the normal intake air filter... if I already own a K&N panel filter, the problem's solved, right?

Pax,

Yes you're OK. The problem is the coating on the stock filter that can cause the filter to catch on fire.

now that is something i would never have expected to ever happen while driving.

this brake light switch recall you speak of...would ford send me a letter telling me about it if my car was affected? or is this a general recall for all 00-03's?

You can go to the Ford Owner's Connection website, put your VIN in the Recall section and it'll tell ya.

My car is at the dealer getting the recall done. This goes further than the bad brake light switch, they tell me they are replacing the harness, not sure how far this goes back into the rest of the wiring.

Also in for passenger window that doesn't go down, burning oil smell (been 1500 miles since last oil change and have had this problem for a while), and wicked pulsation when braking (if warped rotors they'll turn under warranty - provided the pads are still good). I'm at about 32,000 miles.

I had my Brake Pdeal Position Switch (Stop Lamp Switch) and wiring harness from the switch to the Central Junction Box replaced Tuesday.
