I was at best buy today and the "audio specialist" told me that if i put new speakers in my stock setup it would sound horrible. is this true?

Gee, do you think he makes more money from speakers or from complete audio systems?

The weak link in any system is the speaker. Unless a better speaker has the wrong impedance (e.g., 8 ohm instead of 4, or 16 instead of 8), or is power-hungry -- that is, requires heavy wattage to sound its best -- the better speaker will sound better.

As for the stock system, it's hard for an audio engineer to come up with a bad-sounding system, given today's availability of dirt-cheap chips and well-proven reference circuits. I will say that the AM side of any stock Ford system I've had is unemcumbered by any interference rejection or signal pre-amplification...

But as for audio quality -- krikey -- my $7 USB plug-in sound pod + Logitech speakers perform today dang near as well as my $750 McIntosh + $120 Advent speaker system back in 1970.

People have good results with aftermarket speakers on the mach amps. The stock taurus amps, not so much. He probably thinks you dont have the 80w amplifier. Just don't get some super high power handling speakers, and they should sound pretty decent. A subwoofer would augment the sound even more (separate sub + amp required).

I got the cheap ass Pioneer 5x7's for the back and 5.25's for the front. I couldnt be happier with how they sounded, even on the stock G2 POS head unit.

When I upgraded the Head Unit they sounded even better. No need for super expensive speakers.

:werd: I'm no expert, but the sound quality with MACH plus my Pioneer 2-way speakers is pretty decent for a car stereo B)

Plus with your car, it'll be tough to have an aftermarket unit put in, due to the EATC. You could certainly do some modifications to put one in there (3 ways come to mind).

I'm sure he has no idea what the difference is between the stock RCU and the Mach RCU... He's a salesman who knows that you have a Taurus... I'm sure his ears pearked up when he heard the word Taurus! That equals an attempt to "up sell" you on a system!

That's basically what I said. "audio specialists" at Best Buy make me LOL. I used to work in the audio dept. there, and really should have been working in the installation department. Most of them just try to sell you flashy crap. Luckily, they aren't on commission.

Actually, the Best Buy guy may be right for a couple reasons. First of all, many factory systems electronics are custom equalized for the speakers used in the package. Also, most aftermarket speakers aren't nearly as db efficient as the factory units and need a lot more amplifier power to play at the same level. It's basically a crap shoot without upgrading the whole system, or at least additional amplifiers and EQ. For a low buck upgrade, try a small powered subwoofer and front tweeter kit.

^^^^^^What are you talking about? Most Taurii come with door tweeters, and the MACH is plenty with some good speakers. The only reason to get a headunit is for better features/inputs or just to be ballin'

What's who talking about. Most of us already know several Taurii have factory door "A" pillar tweeters. Some even know it's a very basic 2" cone, 6db/octive 1st order crossover network(AKA not very good) design. Rumor is, a few owners have changed out the factory jobs for better dome tweeters, and more advanced 2nd order crossovers. Kinda missed a bit of technical info, in reference to "Some Good Speakers".
