Ok, I've searched through the forums and the archived forums but I can't find anything.

Sometimes I will be driving, and I will hit a bump or something and my trunk will open on its own!
This really sucks on the freeway! It's happened about 10 times in the past year. I have a '92 L and it doesn't have an electric trunk release. I put in the manual trunk release (and fuel door release), but I had the problem before that.

Has anyone else had this problem? Its awful. Once I was in San Francisco, driving across a bridge and it opened up. There was no where to pull over and I had to drive about two miles before I could close it, hoping nothing came out. The worse part is sometimes I won't notice until its been open a few minutes.

I had this exact same problem. Your latch in the rear IS worn, and won't close properly. Pull a latch mechanism from a junk yard, squirt in some graphite lubricant, and reinstall. You'll only need the latch and it's bolts if yours are worn.

You can try just the lubricant on your existing latch first, but on mine it didn't do any good. The latch will probably run $20 at a normal junkyard, $5 at a you-pull-it place.

Ok, thanks again guys. I'll try spraying it until I get down to the junk yard.

You should also bungy cord the trunk lid down to say the spare tire or something else you could hook on to as insurance until you get the latch replaced. Just get the latch to start with. The graphite will eventually wear out. Just fix it right the first time.

Hey! It worked! I got a nice replacement at the junkyard and it hasn't opened since.

Dude, I know that it sucks, but picturing that happening is hilarious. :D

Actually, when my roommate and I were moving a few years ago, we went to pick up a Uhaul that I rented. I let my roommate drive my car back and he must have hit the trunk release at some point after he left the parking lot because I caught up with him and he was driving down the highway with my trunklid open...dumbass - nothing flew out fortunately :D
