I have a 1996 Ford Taurus GL. Just recently it has been doing this:

I can shift into any gear, no problem...drive up the road a bit, stop, the car acts like its in neutral....doesnt move. Wait a few minutes and it sometimes "bangs" into gear, sometimes "pops" into gear gently. Took it to the Transmission guys, they said not the tranny. Once in gear..no probs.

I can put the car up into park and back down into drive, can hear it shift into gear, take my foot off the brake....revs like its in neutral. They did the tranny tune-up, checked the sensors, etc. found nothing, tested the fluid for metal...none.
Anyone have a clue? I also have had probs with the front end...vibration in the brake and gas pedal, intermittently, bucking, possible warped rotor? can hear what sounds like the brakes rubbing and rumbling when braking downhill, intermittently.
Have not found anyone with quite the same prob.

Sounds like the tranny to me. More specifically the forward clutch piston. Get ready to spend some money. Make sure you take it somewhere reputable. I don't think whoever you have been taking it to knows their stuff.

ANd the brakes could just be a badly warped rotor, which is common on our cars, but if you hear noise too when braking, you could be chewing up a rotor if your pads are worn down or if you have a seized caliper.

I had that happen to my car, it ended up being jammed valve body, as per one of the TSBs - I forget which one, but I can look it up for you if you need it. If you catch it quick, you can get an upgraded valve, otherwise you get other damage, like clutch plate or something.
It cost me 550 AUD to fix this problem at a transmission place that specialises in FWD cars.

sounds like one of the shift solniods to me, I keep getting an idiot lit that tells me shift solenoid C stcuk open or inop. THere is a TSB to replace teh clips that hold the shift solenoids in place. The clips used to have rouded corners and now have squasre or vice versa

We are not getting any warning lights coming on. is this an easy job to do yourself or a garage job?

TSB 98-3-7 AX4N Intermittent Neutral
FORD:  1994-98 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY:  1994-98 SABLE
1995-98 CONTINENTAL

ISSUE:
Some vehicles may experience an intermittent Neutral condition after driving and coming to a stop. This may be caused by the bonded seal on the forward clutch piston intermittently not sealing during the 3-2 downshift.

ACTION:
Replace the forward clutch piston with a revised Forward Clutch Piston (F8DZ-7A262-AB). Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Clean and reseal the transaxle completely including replacement of the forward clutch piston with revised forward clutch piston and replace the forward clutch plates if darkened or discolored from heat. Refer to the appropriate Continental Service Manual, Section 07-01, or the appropriate Taurus/Sable Service Manual, Section 07-01B, for details.

Be sure to check end clearance on all three (3) select fit thrust washers (#16, #8, #5) and clutch clearances (forward clutch clearance is 1.02-1.50mm (0.040-0.059")). Be sure to clean and inspect the main control (pump and valve body) and servos. Prior to returning vehicle to customer recheck fluid level at operating temperature.

PART NUMBER PART NAME

This is it

Thanks Julian,We now think this could be a brake related problem as we have been going easy on the brakes all week,no hard braking and we have since not had any transmission problems at all.
Ive heard of a boss switch(i think its called) on the brake pedal, could this be somehow related to the transmission problems?

My car used to do the same thing, it would go netural momentarily, then it would pop into gear. Eventually, it took longer and longer to go back into gear. At times I would have to rev the engine to 2.5 - 3k rpm for it to get back into gear. That of course made for a mad neutral drop
Eventually it would just come out of gear when you come to a stop and stay there. After 5 occurances of the neutral drops, I decided to take the trans in for rebuilding. It shifted fine most of the time.

How much did the transmission rebuild cost???

I am on my second tranny, the first went out at 34K and was covered under warranty. Now it is at 72K and the check engine light is popping on and it's doing some light neutral drops, but only when I am starting from a stand still... I'm sure Ford won't cover it under warranty again (I could be wrong), but how much am I looking at???
