I have a question for the transmission experts out there about the axode/ax4s. My transmission in my 91 sable went out and it has the axode, I wanted to swap in the 94/95 ax4s but I have a question. I noticed that the plugs on top of the transmission by the neutral safety switch, the plug for the shift solenoids and so on, was different on some. Mine has a round style where some has a d style it seems. Was there a difference in the plug on the axode/ax4s from 91-95? The bulk head connector on top of the trans next to the neutral safety switch, were they different from 91 to 95?

I am talking about the connector circled in red, were they different from 91 to 95?

That's called a wire bulk head connector.
It connects the solenoids mounted on the pump case in that side pan there to an internal wiring harness with the harness out side of the car. The AXODE and the AX4S are one in the same transmission holmes. So your swapping same for same just a newer design in that respect with mild updates BUT....In 92' they changed the internal wiring harness and some other goodies on the inside like solenoids. So that's why the bulk head connectors don't match up. You will need to splice in a female connector to fit what ever bulk head is on the trans your picking up to swap and hope that your computer will operate it. I don't think it will though after 93'. "Most" rebuild kits are the same for a 92' AXODE/ AX4S through 1995 though. That's just mechanics though not electrical.
I am not sure if they share the same EPC solenoid, lock up solenoid, or the same 3 shift solenoids or not.
But.. I've been wrong before.. :p

91-91 are the same for sure though.

Your best bet there is to call a local trans shop and ask them.
MAKE SURE you tell them HOW MANY BOLTS ARE ON THE BOTTOM PAN and what year, model ( right down to the vin letter code and if its an LX, GL or what ever ) and engine size its going on.

So I guess the 91 is 91 specific then? I been trying to do alot of research to find out the differences in the axode/ax4s through the years but haven't found much. 1 transmission specialist though I talked to (in the trans buissness 35 years) did tell me the 91 was specific and wouldn't interchange with a newer axode/ax4s, and 1 other place I also checked out told me the same. I guess it has something to do with the electrical internals and the bulk head connector being different.

Well it seems I finally found the answer to my own question. After lots of online research I found this.

Yeah that second 91' was supposed to be a 92' LOL!
AKA "91-92" LOL!

Hmm wonder why your search didn't turn up anything from this forum then ?
I just posted a link to a solenoid diagram and the full text rebuild manual for the AXODE/AX4S/AX4N tech rebuild manual last might in PDF form. Its got all you need in it I would assume.
I'll find it here in a second and post it. Save it to your disk and print it out when you have time. Laminate it and bind it. It will be your holy grail the next time you have trans problems. LOL!

Thanks you guys. It may be that my first Mech ordered the wrong tranny?? I know where to look now.
Cheers, Tony
