Transmission Help

I have a 1996 Ford Taurus wagon GL. Just recently it has been doing this:

I can shift into any gear, no problem., the car acts like its in neutral....doesnt move. Wait a few minutes and it sometimes "bangs" into gear, sometimes "pops" into gear gently if I really gun the motor. I can put the car up into park and back down into drive, can hear it shift into gear, take my foot off the brake....revs like its in neutral.
I have heard it's a common problem, anyone know the problem exactly, and how much to fix, and where to take it, ie dealership, transmission shop. Thank you so much, I cant stand to get ripped off again on car repairs!

I have the same problem with my 91 right now. I would also like to know what the problem is and how to fix it. My car has been good to me ever since 91. No problems, this is the first and I'm very worried about it.

I'm taking it into the Ford dealer where it was bought today to have it checked out, If I find out whats wrong, I'll post it. Lets just hope that I don't need a whole new tranny.............

Well, I'm screwed. They told me today that the Transmission is blown. I'm not spending that much $$$ on it, though. I'm very sad to see it leave, but a 92 Olds Achieva SC awaits, with a Quad 4..........srry guys.
