Transmission Fluid Question

Normally I would track this down on my own but if I have to look at one more specification today my head may explode.

I went to the parts store and got stuff to put the transcooler and spin on filter from my totalled 94 to the 99 I just got, any way they looked up what fluid to use and it said Mercon V.

The back of everyones bottle states something like

recommend for use in GM,Ford,Mazda, Toyota and others where Dexron III or Mercon fluids are specified.

I bought Valvoline max life

Am I covered?

Mike

ps Mobil synthetic doesn't say anything about Mercon V either but the did have a castrol fluid that stated mercon V right on the front.

Mercon III and Mercon V are not the same. Either get a Mercon V or a universal synthetic.

What do you base your statement on ?

It says right on the bottle
"Exceeds the latest performance requirements of Dexron III and Mercon.

Many people have posted on the forums about putting in the wrong kind of mercon fluid into their tranny. They've had problems ranging from gear slippage, abrupt shifts, all sorts of strange noises, and other not-so-nice things you'd want to be thinking about when it comes to your transmission.

Suffice to say, when in doubt, stick to one that clearly states that it is meant for Mercon V trannies. Otherwise, you'll have the same problems and end up spending more $$ trying to flush the wrong fluid out of every nook and cranny in your transmission case.
i would get mercon V.

although my trans. has mercon V in it and it is only supposed to use mercon. But I am using parts from many different year transmissions so I did semi synthetic mercon V.

you might not have any problems but if it is what is specified then that should be what you use.
Mercon and Mercon V are different, don't use something rated for plain 'ole Mercon if your tranny calls for Mercon V.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Mercon V is what they call the synthetic version of Dextron III/Mercon. So if the Vavoline Maxlife is synthetic, then it's really Mercon V, or if it's not, it's Dexton III/Mercon and you should get Mercon V.

That article also stated that Type F is a totally obsolete trans fluid meant for cars from the 60's and yet I swear I saw it on the shelf of some chain store recently.
If the fluids specs do not specifically say it is for Mercon V then I would not use it in a Mercon V tranny. As an example Amsoil Universal Synthetic transmission fluid specifically says Mercon and Mercon V.

Type F was used in Ford trannys into the '80s and power steering systems into the '90s.
