A 2000 Taurus wagon with 75,000 miles on odometer( Vulcan engine) works only in reverse.

Any comments as to what may be the cause will be appreciated.

Most likely the trans is kaput. Check the fluid level and condition. If the fluid is extremely dark and smells burnt, or has a bunch of crud in it, then you need a new one. Do you have any lights on in the cluster?
