My friend has a 93 and he says that sometimes it seems like it "misses" first gear and has no power then he floors it and it'll grab second and take off.

Any ideas? Things to check?

I'd check the trans fluid condition, change it, and hope for the best. Maybe it's just acting wierd because of old fluid. And tell him not to floor it when he notices a problem, slipping clutches is a bad thing.
