I have an appointment to buy two front tires this Saturday. The car is in Florida now, but will be used in the north next year. How far north I don't know yet, but it will not be Canada-north, maybe Maryland-north. Do the folks up there choose tires differently from us southerners? Thanks.

It depends. In Maryland, you're not going to see a whole lot of snow, so you won't need snow tires. A good set of all-weather tires will be fine. Most people in Jersey don't even run winter tires unless it gets really bad. I've never used them in Jersey and been fine, and we get more snow than Maryland does.

I would recommend getting a set of Kumho Ecsta ASX tires. They're very good in snow, and dry and wet traction is amazing. They're relatively cheap, too, only about $80/tire.

Thanks. I will check if Discount Tire carries or can get the Kumho tires.
Does speed rating have anything to do with winter driving?

Like I have said before, get all four at the same time! Especially if the car is moving north and you think you need tires that can handle snow, it is important to have similar tires back and front.
