My '89 Taurus has a timing issue.

I'm trying to get the timing set correctly. Replaced the harmonic balancer because the other one slipped and was inaccurate. I put the new one on and timed the car to 10* with the spout disconnected...and the car runs like crap. If I advance the timing it runs normal. What is the deal here? I also replaced the timing chain set, thinking that the loads of slack it had would fix the issue. The distributor that the PO had installed is out of a junkyard car, and the part # matches a '92 Taurus. Could this be the issue? I'm really scrathing my head here...

Thanks for any info!

I'm thinking that when the distributor was installed, it might have been a tooth off. I had this happen once and It ran, but not well. I couldn't get it to run better no matter how far I twisted it. What is the timing where it runs fine? Maybe you should just set it where it runs good and leave it. Grayle

I would locate true TDC using a piston stop and see if the balancer correctly indicates TDC.
