I had an exhaust leak that would seem to go away when the engine warmed up. I thought it was the manifolds so I tried to re-tighten the bolts. Didn't help.. I thought maybe I had a crack in the pipes but after inspecting them again I found none.

Then I noticed the EGR tube from the rear exhaust manifold wasn't actually screwed into anything.

I pulled the valve off and to my astonishment the pipe actually just lifted out of the manifold! In case you don't know, that's a double threaded connector down there. One side has a thread that's slightly bigger than the other. The smaller end was put in the larger threaded manifold and the smaller end forcefully threaded into the tube. Wtf?

I managed to un-thread it and fix the problem but seriously? That's a huge, glaringly obvious mistake. I really should have caught that when I did the heads but I didn't touch the EGR system, all I did was unbolt the valve.

It is amazing the half baked "repairs" you find on a used car!

Maybe he was deceived by an unscrupulous shop, too?
By the way, how did you do the moving image?
