It all started with a dying AC clutch and ended with the compressor pulley self-destructing, so I will be replacing the compressor and receiver/drier when the parts come in. I have a question: (FYI, this is a 2002 wagon)

Where the hose belonging to the receiver/drier assembly connects to the evaporator at the firewall there is a square metal thingy (I cannot for the life of me remember what that is actually called.) surrounding the hose connector. How do I take that thing off? Are we talking pliers and/or a screwdriver, or is this one of those special tool items? I already have the proper tool to disconnect the hose. I'm just not sure about the other thing.

Also, have any of you had experience with taking your car to a shop to have the AC system evacuated and recharged after you've done all the other work? Any idea how much it will cost? If it costs too much, I think I'll just get the vacuum pump and manifold gauges and do it myself. I've had the training, so it's no mystery to me.
