I have a 1998 Mercury Sable GS. The temperature gauge never goes above Cold (although the heat blows warm/hot. I flushed the coolant and replaced the thermostat. Still the gauge always shows cold. I'm guessing that the sending unit is bad. Where is it located?

Thanks for any help you may be.

It might depend on the engine. For the Vulcan, it is next to the thermostat housing, a bit towards the back of the engine:
Motor vehicle Automotive fuel system Automotive air manifold Automotive exterior Auto part

It is the right sensor with the brown connector. The other is the ECT sensor (measures the same temperature for the PCM).

Don't guess - test. You're right to find the sender first, but we can't help you without information. You should put ALL the car's details & history (as much as you know) into your signature so it shows with each post, as this page explains:

Phone apps don't always show signatures, so you may need to switch to a real browser in desktop mode on your phone, or just use a desktop/laptop computer. Put your location (nearest city) in your profile &/or signature, & upload an avatar of the car. The more pics you post (NOT in your sig) of the car, engine, wiring, labels, & undercarriage, the more likely we can help you. Not all its details are relevant to these issues, but you don't necessarily know which ones are relevant, so just put everything in now.
