I have the standard stereo w/ temp controls. Does anyone have any suggestions on improving the system using the stock stereo? I know I can change the stereo and buy a new face plate to convert it, but I'd rather not do that now. I'm not looking for an extreme sound, but any improvement to the factory sound.

There are many ways various people have gone about upgrading the stock system, while still maintaining the factory head unit. Just search this category and you'll find some of the different things. I know for $80 (including shipping/handling), I bought and installed the factory optional Mach Audio System tweeter pods in my car and wired them to the lower 6x8 door speakers and got better sound, but I was also aiming to improve the aesthetics of the car interior. If you're focused on sound, you can spend your money elsewhere...Plus, all this depends on how much you want to spend...

Quick answer:
Aftermarket speakers.
Aftermarket HU
Aftermarket Amp
All three will improve sound. If you don't want to replace the HU, then I would suggest to change out the speakers. That will help quite a bit.
