After replacing the radiator cap and running the car I noticed the degass tank felt cold/lukewarm after a 20 mile run. Maybe I still have a issue. I checked the oil and it is dark amber and smells like oil. The top hose is hot and the bottom hose is cold/lukewarm. I am looking at the T-stat as the next step.
Seems like these things happen only when it is cold out!

I would replace the tstat, but you might have a clogged rad. How old is the waterpump?
