For a good few months now, my brakes have been real squeaky, which is, to my little knowledge at least, a sign that I need new brakes.
My friend's dad said he'll replace the brake pads on my front wheels for $40 in labor and I buy the parts. Sounds pretty good to me, but in my driving the car, it seems to me that the squeaking, which has continually become worse, is coming from the back. I haven't told him that I think this yet, but he had previously said that brakes in the rear wear 5 times slower than brakes in the front. Is there any truth to this? Because I'm thinking he just doesn't wanna take the drums in the rear apart to replace the shoes.

The back brakes do wear significantly slower than the fronts. On average, I get 3 front changes to 1 rear.

A way to see if it is actually the rear brakes is to partially apply the parking brake and listen for the squeal.

And +1 on the Wagner (thermoquiet).

Someone could have also drove around with the park brake on and used up the rear brakes.
