Greetings,

I just had my 93 Taurus, 3.0 Vulcan, 162,000 miles diagnosed by a transmission specialist. The transmission specialist hooked up a portable transmission instrument and we took my car for a test drive. According to his readout, at speed of 35mph, my on-board car computer thinks I’m traveling 60 mph. In addition, his readout showed some slippage on the 4th gear. After the test drive, he wrote up a diagnostic report stating that I have a “faulty” speed sensor. He handed the report to the shop owners and they quoted me $360.00 to repair and replace the faulty speed sensor. They said the job would take 3-4 hours to complete. Anyway, I was curious on how much the part was and called a local auto parts store and was quoted for $19.00. My question is how difficult is it to replace the speed sensor and where is it located?

Kind Regards

It's on the transmission where the speedometer connects. Follow the speedometer cable all the way down to the end. There's a wire connecting to the sensor as well. I think it's just one bolt (don't remember) to get it out after unscrewing the speedometer cable.

Easiest way to reach it is to.... this will sound goofy...

get a piece of thick cardboard (or two pieces) and lay it on the engine. From the front - driver side, climb up on and lay down accross the engine so you can reach down between the engine and the passenger side firewall area.

For what it's worth... :lol2: it really is a 3-4 hour job for me... :lol2: 20 min for the task and 2:30 ~ 3:30 waiting for the engine to cool-down enough to climb on. :lol2:

That'll be $341.00...

I appreciate your concise directions installing the transmission speed sensor.
Well, it took me over two hours to figure it out this morning. Once I figured it out it was matter of patience and instinct in putting back the pieces together. I don't have $341 but I can send you a six-pack.

Regards.
