I was coming home from the grocery store last night, and some dips*** in a newer Prelude (like 2000-ish) kept driving like an a**, trying to race me. I had about 14 bags of groceries in the trunk, my fiance was with me, and I was in an area laden with cops, so I wasn't having any of it. <_< He kept cutting people off and rocking back and forth at stop lights.

Eventually, we caught a light together, and he starts revving his "engine" and rocking back and forth. It just so happened that I was in the right lane, which disappears in about 1000 feet, so I figured I'd floor it and see if I could head him off and get in the left lane, just for s***s and giggles.

He took off just before the light changed, but I nailed it right away, so he only got a few feet on me. I caught up surprisingly quick, and soon he was at my rear doors. He didn't seem to be drifting back too much between shifts, so I assume he was OK at shifting a manual trans. I didn't get far enough ahead of him to change lanes, so I let off at about 55 or so, and he flew by.

Now like I said he seemed to be shifting OK, and his car said VTEC on it, so what gives? Shouldn't he have own3d me? I had my subs, about 100 lbs of groceries, and a passenger.

At the next couple lights, he wouldn't even pull all the way up beside me, and he just lagged back when the light changed, like he was embarassed or something. I guess getting beaten by a grocery-getter will do that to you. When I finally turned off the road, he floored it and whined by my it high rpms, like he was owning me or something.

It's pretty funny how you try justify your race in the thread.  Like anybody really needs an excuse to race.

Well, my fiance's brother was killed in a car accident... in fact last night was the EXACT anniversary of his accident, so I really DO need to justify it!

The Prelude was black. I just did some research on Preludes and it seems that they are all slugs... I guess I just thought they were fast based on what Prelude owners always say.

The VTEC system is hit or miss big time whether car is "fast" or slow as dirt. In my friend's Accord (Same 4-banger in the Prelude probably) there is no set acceleration time. Sometimes the came system switches over, and sometimes it won't. Lousy cars if you ask me.

Yeah, the old ones are a real joke, but the 5th gen manual supposedly has 200hp and weighs under 3000 lbs., so you'd think it would move... but no.

Well that's the problem. It weighs 3,000 lbs. That's a good amount of weight for a worthless 4-cylinder to lug around.

Not all Preludes with the ~190HP H22A1 or the ~200HP H22A4 are manual. Only the ones with the "Type-SH" decal on truck lid have a stick. You could have been racing an automatic one... it's not a fast car.

The H22 motor is really heavy, so in a sense, it's like having a heavier 200HP v6 motor in there. So the mtx Prelude's straight-line performance is more comparable to something like the Contour SVT's or the v6 Tiburon's.

Definitely a manual. Did you read the "rocking back and forth" part? I figured since I had at least 800 lbs. on him, plus I'm crippled by the 4 spd ATX, he'd give me a run, but it was over by 50mph.
It did not have a SH badge, but SHs are not the only ones with the stick shift. SHs got the torque-biasing differential, and that's about the only difference between the SH and the regular manual Prelude.

Interesting, maybe the dude doesn't know how to drive his own car.

Well, after checking the stats on the manual Prelude, there was no way he would have beaten me without mods. They barely scrape out a 7-second 0-60.

Oh you drive a modded v8 SHO, nevermind. I was under the assumption that you had a Duratec.

I had a modded '98 Prelude for about 1 year. It was quick, but not really fast. It had true CAI, ceramic coated headers, Greddy cat-back, Apexi VTEC controller / air/fuel converter, plugs/wires, cams..... everything but a turbo. It was fun. I loved the sound of the Greddy catback and the VTEC engagement. People think they are faster than they really are because they can rev to 8500rpm. My SVT Contour is faster without mods

Well all this aside, just remember that most people say and think their cars are faster than what they really are.

Here is why the honda owners (and neon, and Cavilier) think theirs is a speed demon - they are small cars and the ride is not so smooth. Think of when you are on a real bad road, it feels like you are flying almost.

I once had an POS 83 escort, and the ride was horrid. It felt a lot faster than my taurus, just cause you could feel every rock in the road. Now granted, the only thing an 83 escort will beat is "walking",

I think if any one of you were to drive a honda, yeah, it WOULD feel faster than a Taurus, simply cause the ride is not as smooth.

BUT - an unmodded taurus could outrun an unmodded honda, and a fully modded taurus (especially SHO) could EAT a fully modded honda.

I agree for the most part, but it depends what you mean by "fully modded." Fully modded for a Taurus would probably fall short of twin turbos, since it hasn't been done more than once or twice. However, there are several Preludes running that have had $25K+ dumped into them and are putting down 500HP+ at the wheels. Although, Hondas that are "fully modded" *according to their owners* would usually consist of a stock Honda with $500 worth of APC bolt-ons from Pep Boys, and a fart cannon. Net gain 5.7 HP @ 7000 rpm.

Yeah but when they have to dump many thousands into their honda to make it really go, is it even worth it?
hell, with enough money, you could prolly make a geo metro faster than a lamborghini, but at what cost? <_<

i agree about the rough ride of the hondas. I drove a modded integra last night with a bunch of performance goods on it, and i was getting my a** kicked by the ride quality. When i got back in my Taurus, even with the eibachs, it felt like i was driving a cloud.
