Well,

Shes back in the shop monday, there is a nasty smell coming from the vents and the A/C is not preforming that well.

Also the EATC is engaging the compressor in Floor only and Panel only, as well as erratic cooling and warming.

As for the A/C and Smell, I found this:

Silent Recall

It lists Several years in the TSB if you take notice.

I am intrigued because mine has been doing that for quite some time now. It blows cold at my feet and on top of the dashboard, but not at the vents at eye level

I thought it was all in my head, but I guess not <_<

Damnit.

Thanks

Way to go again Ford.

There's bacteria growing in your A/C system that is causing a nasty stench? It can cause health problems? Oh we won't notify the customers. We won't say anything unless they complain.

What is Ford's deal with owning up to problems? Just own up to it, fix it, and learn from the design flaw.

BTW, the link worked for me.

Ford Has Fix To Taurus/Sable Cowl Leaks

Robert Lane
05 December 2003
Dearborn, Michigan

Ford Motor Company has a fix for 2001-2003 Taurus and Mercury Sable models with leaking cowls. Both models built after 01 May 2003 may exhibit water leaking into the blower motor case which may result in mold, electrical problems, climate control problems or poor air conditioning/heating performance.

The fix is free for the asking at any Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealership under provisions of the bumper to bumper warranty coverage under TSB 03-15-6.

This is considered a "silent recall" where upon Ford may NOT notify owners of this condition. Owners should contact Pat Hoye (313) 248-8336 at Ford World Headquarters or see the front page of BlueOvalNews.com.

Owners are advised to have their vehicles inspected before the warranty period expires.

It's your money - demand a better product and Ford will listen.

Learn from it? Seems like wishful thinking, especially in light of the fact that this problem has been around for a while, there was even a TSB (Article No. 99-19-5) covering Gen III Sables and Taurii ("...Musty and mildew type odors may come from the air conditioning/heating system. These odors may be caused by mildew-type fungi growth in the A/C evaporator. It is most noticeable when the A/C is first turned on...")

I suppose to be entirely fair, it should be pointed out that Ford is not the only car maker that has problems with some of their A/C systems acquiring a yucky smell to them. For example: Chevy Talk Thread

Yeah, I know other makers have had the issue, but this whole thing wreaks of typical Ford customer care. "Let's keep the problems quiet so the customer doesn't know they have a common problem (TSB release) until their warranty is expired." This way when you go in to have the problem fixed, they fix it and send you on your way simply stating "it was covered by warranty." Not knowing you bought a car that hasn't experienced the other 25 problems they have released TSBs for. So you'll end up taking it back 25 more times before you roll over 30,000 miles thinking the car is a POS when in the end they were all known issues. By then you trade it in or end the lease and someone else buys it and now has a car with all issues fixed. The other American auto makers do the same thing, but no where near as bad as Ford. Don't get me wrong, I love my Fords, but I have been seeing this getting worse over the years.

Mazda hasn't been at all shy about the TSBs on my MPV. They've been more than happy to say they have a problem and they will fix it.

Sorry for the long rant...This kind of thing really bugs me. We're in the internet age and I wonder how long it will take for large companies to realize that consumers aren't in the dark like they used to be.

My 2001 was built 1/01 and it had the cowl leak. I've had the musty smell in the AC for about 20 seconds or so then it goes away before the leaking cowl problem. This was a problem with GenI and II also. Natbeckie the problem is getting worse at Ford over the years. They are screwing their people over warranty repairs. A wrench can "lose" money doing those when the repair takes 2 hours and Ford only pays him for 1 hour. Would you be jumping on those warranty jobs if thats how yu made a living? The system is broken when Ford listens to beancounters who don't know squat about doing the work to save a few bucks rather than the people who know how long these repairs take.

Everyone knows that car manufactures won't be perfect, ever. What they need to do is own up to their mistakes and fix them. Seems simple enough, yet they seem unable or unwilling to grasp that concept...
