I just bought a 1990 SHO for my son's first car. While driving it home, we noticed that the shifter is hard to shift into 1st gear. Its goes in but is very hesistant.Called a Ford dealership and they told me that they had discontinued it. Any suggestions on what might work as a replacement?

The rod shifter from a mid-'91 and up SHO is a great upgrade. Much more solid feel. You could also try changing the bushings on your current cable shifter. I'm pretty sure that SHO Source carries replacement bushings.

My concern would be if the shifter is the issue, not the transmission. I would try disconnecting the shifter from the transmission linkage then try to manually shift the gears with the transmission linkage. If you still have resistance going into first, the problem is likely internal to the transmission.

I hope the shifter is your issue. Parts for the SHO MTX are long discontinued and almost impossible to come by.
