Phone call from daughter in college"Dad the car won't shift" next call "Dad the shifter came off". Dads response  :( . Any body else had this experiance . The victem is a '93 Sable. The shift lever broke off at the socket and my repair CD crapped out. It can be shifted with a screw driver but is very hard to get out off park so it is left in netural. What do I have to take off to put a new shifter in?

I thought it screws on, but then again, I've never taken it off. You can try taking the steering column shroud off and see how it attaches to the column. Maybe it's held on with a few screws. About it not shifting from park, do the brake lights work?

Took the shroud off. The shifter just slides in and a pin holds it there, it broke at the pin hole and cracked the housing a little. Looks like just grab one ot the bone yard(100 miles away) and slip it in. I did put a new BOO switch in. I think this is what caused the excessive force on the shifter.
