The flashing O/D OFF light means, "Don't drive me... I'm a FWD Ford, and it's time for me to hurt your wallet." If the SES light is on, you need to get the codes read. More than likely, it will say something about one of your shift solenoids. In other words, time to rebuild the tranny.

Don't freak out YET. Could be a loose connector or something... wouldn't be the first time. :)

Check the tranny fluid level. While you are at it, wipe off some of the fluid onto a white napkin or paper towel. If it is a bright red color, the fluid is in good shape. If it is very dark brown or black, the fluid needs to be replaced. Not that I would bother changing it at this point, but at least you will know why the trans got messed up. :(

If the fluid level is low or not even showing up on the dipstick, fill it up and see if it starts acting normal again. If that's the case, you will need to figure out why the level got so low.

Well ya know, cars break, nothing you can do about it. It's a transmission, they go out in all cars.

There is no way you can check the codes yourself.
