On my son's 97 taurus, the front passenger seat belt will not pull out unless it is fully retracted first and then if it is pulled out and latched, it is tight and will not extend, even if pulled slowly- it remains tight until retracted completely.

Is there a way to fix this tight seat belt or do I need to replace it?

You need a new retractor. I had this happen when I first got the car. It would retract but once connected just got tighter and tighter when the person moved.

I have one in gray if you need it.

Are there any diagrams online of how to remove the front passenger seat belt on a 97 Taurus?

Also, does this require any special tools or just a large allen wrench?

thanks

It takes a large torx bit. You just pop off the trim and there is one on the bottom and at the top.

Torx T-50 is the size for a Gen 4, and I assume the same for a Gen 3.

Drats...I got another seat belt from a Taurus in the bone yard that appeared to be a 97 and when I got it home, found that the tab was a different size and had a different shaped slot in it so it won't work unless I go back and get the female receiver end of the belt.

I wonder why it was so important for Ford to have to change something so simple...
