I just read this in the owner's manual to my 2004 taurus se. If the battery has been disconnected such as for battery replacement. That resets the computer and it must re-learn its idle and fuel trim strategy for optimum divability and performance.

To begin the process, with the car at a complete stop, set the parking brake, put the gearshift in park and turn off all accessories and start the engine. Allow the engine to idle until it reaches normal operating temperature.

Allow it to idle for at least one minute after reaching normal operating temp. Then turn on the A/C and allow the engine to idle for at least one minute.

Release the parking brake and with your foot on the brake pedal, and A/C on, put the vehicle in drive and allow the engine to idle for at least one minute. Then drive the vehicle for at least 10 miles before turning it off. This will complete the re-learning process.
