Recently I drove a rental car with lane change warning light mounted on A pillar. When a car in the blind spot, the light comes on. How does this work and is there a way to retrofit my 06 Taurus with this safety feature?

It's usually a small radar sensor. Sometimes on an outside mirror or on/under the rear bumper cover.

My daughter's Mazda 6 has one on each rear corner under the bumper cover. Pricy suckers at $750 each.

I am not sure I would trust the ultrasonic system compared with the OEM radar (microwave) system. Too much broad spectrum sound noise from tires, etc out there when driving at higher speeds on a crowded road.
