On our new car (buick) it had the corny dealer sticker. i removed it with a blade (smart). It came clean, but there is still the sticky crap left, a little.

what would clean it off completely without causing any paint damage? if this is not possible, what is the best way otherwise?

Blades are dangerous cause you can scratch the paint (obviously). Time and heat (hairdryer, etc) with dental floss works great. As for the residue, goo gone works great. Just wash afterwards

I shall try these things.

I used a blade, nicked the paint a bit, but it does not look as bad as the dealer sticker. Not as evident.
I figure at least they didn't rivet some logo on there like on some older cars.
