Its dead, Power steering fluid leaks out as fast as I add it. is it very dificult to replace by yourself? or would I be better off paying the mechanic $400?

I would recommend taking it to a mechanic. I believe you need to take out a lot of stuff before you get to the rack and pinion.

damn. well, thanks. was hopeing I could do it myself. I still feel kind of ripped off by my mechanic (Transmission overhauled for $1571.91, and it still stutters through most gears if I give it 1/3 throttle and he had the car for 3 weeks or more.) looks like its time to find another mechanic that is around the same price or better that can get me my car back in under a month

$400 is a GREAT DEAL! I spent $600 on getting it done, and that was done by my neighbor Ford mechanic. Other shops quoted me $800-$1500.

Unless you can drop the engine out the bottom of the car, take it to a mechanic.
