Anyone have good luck using a "quick fix boot"?....as in a CV boot that is slit and can fit onto axle without taking it apart and it seals up... used to replace a torn CV boot? I am tempted to try one but then also knowing the whole half axle part is only about $60 (but probably several hours of labor) makes me think it may be better to just go new. My axle is not making any noise....yet.

if it's been like that for any length of time, you're going to want to replace the entire thing. Moisture has probably already gotten in and started causing damage.

I think it only cost me between $100-200 to have my whole CV axle replaced. It wasn't that bad

I tried the split boot years back, I mean like 10 years back. Though I removed dirt thoroughly, it soon started to tick on turning. Eventually, the half axle was replaced. The contacts are under stress and speed. Once protection is lost, deterioration sets in quick.

I had an old Escort that I put a $20 quick boot kit on every 2 years. I repacked the joint each time, didn't have trouble with it. The quick boot kits range in quality from "mediocre" to "how can they sell this junk" though.

^^^^ +1 I put a split boot on an old Tempo years ago. I caught the rip in the original before it got very big and let much, if any contamination in. Repacked with grease, put on split boot. Lasted 2 years until I sold the car.
