Pulling Ses Codes

has anyone figured out how to pull the DTC codes that set off the SES light using the display in the Digital climate control on a gen III? my car is throwing a light, and resetting the computer didn't fix it, so chances are its something bad this time. I have the instructions on how to do it, but it always just give me 888 no matter what. are any of the code readers sold at advace auto any good?
