not my car, but a '03 sable has a check engine light, code reader says "po 340-camshaft position sensor malfunction" engine runs good though, is it on its way out? if just a 20 dollar part (the sensor) will cure this then great. i cleared the code, the check engine light didnt come back on again until the next day.

I suggest changing the entire sycro assy. Often, the upper bearing (if you can call it that) goes, and the metal vane takes out the Hall sensor. Failing syncro bearings (very common) can cause the oil pump to stop pumping.

Not sure why Jeff said that.

I would definitely just change out the CPS first as it is pretty simple change and easy to get to.

i'll certianly check the shaft for "bearing wobble" while im in there, this car has about 105,000 miles on it. its a nice ride-wish id found it for myself! my '93 taurus was recently replaced with a '97 blazer (the little one, not the full-size). im missing the 3.0 fuel economy!
