After some very close looking, I've found my airbag light has been on because of this damage.

I'm looking for what my options are since I don't know if it's safe to try to cut out the bad portion and fix it with some heat shrink. I also don't want to pay the massive ($600?) cost for a new one from the dealer.

Cut the wire at the pinch and use a barrel connector. Should be fine.
