Here's a puzzling question

A little over a year ago i had tranny replaced. Since they had it opened up anyway I had the rear main seal and pan gasket replaced - it had been dripping on garage floor and using 1-2 quarts per oil change cycle.

Wow, now more oil spots on the floor - but wait in now uses a quart ever 400-500 miles. Still no drips 20 K past repairs, no blue smoke, no oil in coolant.

Any clues as to where the oil is going ?

I would say it's being burnt up and the cats are cleaning up the smoke.

I would also say that that was the problem before you had the seal and gasket changed. 1-2 quarts of oil per change would leave a large oil spill on the floor.

How many miles on the engine?

Miles 154 K

I agree that a lot of the oile is goeing through combustion - but, cant figure out why the immediate incresae with tranny change and seals/ gaskets

It would be a big spot on the floor buth the leak (especially seal) would be much greater when driving - right?
